Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about custom wheels, ordering, timing, and care.

Why are hand built wheels better?

A good wheel builder can put more care into final finishing, especially proper tensioning and stress relieving. A properly built wheel should almost never break spokes under normal riding conditions, which is why we offer a lifetime guarantee against spoke breakage on all our builds.

Hand building also lets us select parts that match your riding style, priorities, and budget instead of relying on an off-the-shelf specification.

Are hand built wheels always expensive?

While rarely the cheapest option initially, hand built wheels can be more affordable than you might think. Many riders move their wheels from bike to bike over the years. Hand building can also let us replace only a damaged rim or hub instead of throwing away otherwise good parts.

How long does it take for new wheels?

If the parts are in stock, we can typically build a wheelset in around one or two weeks depending on the season. Backordered parts or custom decals, paint, or anodizing can extend the timeline by a few months.

What kind of wheels can you build?

We build wheels for mountain, gravel, road, track, touring, tandem, BMX, cargo bikes, pedicabs, wheelchairs, hand cycles, Sur-Rons, and nearly anything else that uses a wire-spoked wheel.

How do I order wheels?

Start with our wheel quote form or call the shop at (719) 428-5861. We will discuss your bike, riding, goals, budget, and component options before providing pricing and an estimated timeline.

Do new wheels need to be re-tensioned after the first few rides?

Properly tensioned and stress-relieved wheels should remain stable from the beginning. The mark of a great wheel is one you put on your bike and do not have to worry about.

What custom colors and styles are available?

Options range from colored spoke nipples and hubs to locally painted rims and custom carbon-rim decals. Tell us what you have in mind and we will help determine what is practical for your timeline and budget.

Can you teach me how to build my own wheels?

Yes. We offer one-on-one and group wheel-building lessons when scheduling allows. Contact the shop so we can discuss timing.

Still have a question?

We are happy to talk through your bike, repair, or custom wheel project.
